A wonderful Mettach beer stein by Villeroy & Boch of Germany, depicting an Etruscan scene. The Etruscans, who lived in Etruria, were known as Tyrrhenians by the Greeks. They were at their height in Italy from the 8th to the 5th century B.C. Herodotus reports, as a theory of their origin, that the Etruscans came from Asia Minor. This area is now Tuscany. Styles from the Etruscan past have often been reintroduced in Mettlach wares. This beautiful .5 liter stein retains its original pewter thumb hinge which is in the shape of a joker and is in excellent condition.
The stein bears the incised Mettlach abbey mark above the form number "2192" and the date mark of "96" for the year 1896.
