A wonderful Mettach beer stein by Villeroy & Boch of Germany depicts medical literature. The image painted on the porcelain lid is of a serpent-entwined rod representing the Rod of Asclepius, Asclepius being the Greek god associated with healing and medicine. This beautiful .5 liter stein retains its original zoomorphic pewter thumb hinge which is in the shape of an owl and is in excellent condition.
The stein bears the incised Mettlach abbey mark above the form number "2001" and the date mark of "96" for the year 1896.
