A lovely Mettach beer stein by Villeroy & Boch of Germany depicts the trumpeter from the epic poem "The trumpeter of Säckingen" by Joseph Victor von Scheffel, a well-loved classic of German literature. The main characters of Scheffel's poetry, Franz Werner Kirchhofer (the trumpeter) and his mistress, Ursula von Schönau (Margaretha) were real-life 17th century citizens of Säckingen. Despite the resistance of the von Schöngau familiy, the bourgeois son of Kirchhofer managed to marry the noble Maria Ursula. The image painted on the porcelain lid is of a castle. This beautiful .5 liter stein retains its original pewter thumb hinge and is in excellent condition.
The stein bears the incised Mettlach abbey mark above the form number "1998" and the date mark of "96" for the year 1896.
Circa, 1896
