This a wonderful Mettach beer stein by Villeroy & Boch of Germany, features Gambrinus, a legendary king of Flanders, and an unofficial patron saint of beer or beer brewing. He is often depicted as a European king, as an English knight of the Middle Ages, or as a plump old man. In 1543, the German poet Burkart Waldis wrote of Gambrinus, explaining that Gambrinus learned the art of brewing from Isis, the ancient Egyptian goddess of motherhood and fertility. The German on the stein reads "Es hat konig in Flandern gesoffen das u dies bis endlich wahre cervecis." This beautiful .5 liter stein retains its original pewter thumb hinge and is in excellent condition.
The stein bears the incised Mettlach abbey mark above the form number "2027" and the date mark of "91" for the year 1891.
