This large porcelain group by Meissen epitomizes that beloved firm's mastery of mythological themes. Capturing a bacchante, a follower of Bacchus, making merry with fauns and a satyr who fills her chalice with wine; this magnificent group boasts exceptional color and intricate detailing. In addition to presenting figures of courtly life, Meissen also created figures associated with daily life and mythological tales. This included real people like shepherds, gardeners, venders and other tradesmen, in addition to allegorical representations and personifications of the arts, sciences, elements and Greco-Roman deities. Among the most popular of this latter group were figures representing the Four Seasons and other natural forces. This figure highlights the exceptional skill of Meissen artisans. A very similar figure is featured in Meissen: Collector's Catalogue by Laurence Mitchell.

Meissen: The Allure of Continental Porcelain

Early in the 18th century, Augustus the Strong, elector of Saxony, arrested alchemist Johann Friedrich Bottger and imprisoned him in the town of Meissen; his mission, to discover the secret formula for hard paste porcelain. In 1708 Bottger unlocked the mystery and found the key to both porcelain and his freedom, and by 1718 factories began springing up across Europe fostering an atmosphere of ferocious competition.

By 1720, the Meissen factory was producing wares that eclipsed even the finest Chinese porcelain. They dominated the European market and influenced porcelain production around the world.
