Item Details

  • Height:
    9 3/4 Inches
  • Period:
    20th Century
  • Origin:
This magnificent half liter-sized Mettlach beer stein by the Villeroy & Boch firm depicts a knight mounted on his charger and having a final drink before battle. The exceptionally detailed, etched decoration extends to various other colorfully rendered scenes from medieval life, while a brick tower insert graces the pewter lid. This fine example also retains its original Greek warrior thumblift, a quality that makes this stein very desirable.

This stein bears all of the proper incised marks used between the years 1883 to 1931 under the base. The Mettlach "abbey" incised mark with "METTLACH" and the initials V&B indicate the Mettlach factory Villeroy & Boch as the maker; the incised mark "GES. GESCH." denotes that the pattern is right protected, and "2765" indicates the form number. In addition, the Roman numeral II is the half-liter capacity code, the number "97" is the mystery number, and "02" on the lower right is the date mark for 1902.

Dated 1902

9 3/4" high
