An excellent pair of Dresden porcelain figures modeled by the renowned Carl Thieme. Entitled "Man and Woman From Malabar," these intricate pieces are modeled after a Meissen design by Friedrich Elias Meyer. Dressed in exotic, richly colored costumes, the figures are musicians, she bearing a hurdy gurdy, and he playing a mandolin accompanied by a white rat perched in his hat. Carl Thieme was the founder of the Potschappel traditional art porcelain factory in Saxony that later became the SP Dresden, or Saxon Porcelain Manufactory Dresden. His factory was one of the few Dresden porcelain factories to escape destruction during WW II.
