This superb Victorian games compendium contains all the essentials needed for an entertaining evening at home. Crafted of luxurious mahogany with an inset "Games" plaque on the lid, this compendium is filled to capacity, housing all the necessities for playing chess, checkers, backgammon, cribbage, and dominos in the double level case. Included are chess and checkers pieces, domino tiles, a pair of dice and a dice cup, a cribbage board and pegs, brass tokens and two brass counters for a game of whist. In addition, an embossed leather games board with chess/checkers on one side and backgammon on the other is folded and neatly tucked into the lid.
Games were perhaps the most popular activities in the great houses of England and Europe until the early 20th century. Games tables were staples in fashionable drawing rooms, and games compendiums like this were absolutely essential elements of home entertainment among the affluent, as they offered a variety of amusements.
The whist counters bear the Victorian Lozenge mark for January 1860
