This sparkling American cut glass oval bowl by L. Straus & Sons is crafted in the magnificent Drape or Stars and Banners pattern. This dramatic design, patented in 1901, is an enchanting display of bold stars, fans and large fabric-like swags. Founded by Lazarus Straus and three of his sons after the close of the Civil War, L. Straus & Sons was among the most respected importers of china, porcelain, glassware and crockery. In 1873, second son Nathan Straus convinced Rowland H. Macy to allow the firm to open a concession in the basement of Macy's store on 14th Street. By 1884, the Strauses were part owners and by 1896 they were sole owners of R. H. Macy's & Co.
