The remarkable craftsmanship of Goldscheider ceramics is beautifully captured in this exceptional terracotta cane stand. At the base, the French Queen Blance of Castille is granting the accolade to Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans and patron saint of France. Symbols of France, including the Fleur de lis and the stylized lily petals along the rim of the stand, allude to the importance of the scene depicted. Standing at just over three feet high, this cane stand is a fine example of Goldscheider terracotta.
The stand bears the impressed signature mark "Friedrich Goldscheider Wien" and the "REPRODUCTION RESERVEE" mark under the base. The numbers "01182/9/10" are also impressed and are believed to be the model, production and craftsman numbers, respectively. A painted maker's mark of "M" is also visible under the base. The model number beginning with "0" indicates the stand was created between 1897 and 1914.
