This outstanding painting is the work of William Adolphe Bouguereau, unquestionably one of history's greatest artistic geniuses, as well as one of the most decorated artists of all time. This portrait of a young girl peeling an apple, looking at the viewer with a wistful smile, beautifully demonstrates the master's genius for human anatomy and ability to capture the nuances of personality and mood of his subjects.
Deeply influenced by the classical tradition, Bouguereau is immediately recognized for his amazing portraits idealizing the human figure, and this oil on canvas exemplifies his remarkable oeuvre. A student of the great Neoclassical artist, Ingres, he created a painting technique that boasts an unsurpassed degree of finish and luminous coloration, distinctive hallmarks of the French Academy. SInce 1960 his values on the art market have exploded, along with his increasing popularity, commanding incredibly high prices at auction.
