Entitled Banquet of the Gods, this incredible Japanese ivory elephant tusk depicts the hand-carving of the Seven Gods of Fortune. Measuring nearly seven feet wide with an actual length of almost eight feet, the tusk showcases high relief carving of exceptional artistry from end to end, with intricate carvings of the deities also on the reverse. The Seven Gods of Fortune, also known as the Seven Lucky Gods, are a favorite subject of ivory artisans and originate from a blending of Shinto and Japanese folklore. Often represented in netsuke form, it is quite extraordinary to find such a spectacular interpretation of these mythological figures. Such a large carving would have been specially commissioned and was accomplished at a great expense. This remarkable tusk is an example of exemplary turn-of-the-century Japanese craftsmanship.

The tusk bears an inscription and red cartouche written in Kanji.

Certified import documentation from CITES is available for this object.
