This four-volume catalogue documents the impressive collection of miniatures owned by turn-of-the-century banker and philanthropist J. Pierpont Morgan. As well as being a giant of finance and industry, J. P. Morgan was one of the foremost American collectors of art, antiques and rare manuscripts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His miniatures were mostly of notable European figures such as Marie Antoinette and Mary Queen of Scots, and included the work of such masters as Hans Holbein, Isaac Oliver, and J.B. Jacques Augustin, whose work Morgan had purchased from the artist's widow. In 1935, Morgan's son, Jack Pierpont Morgan, sold his father's collection of miniatures at auction at Christie's in London. The collection brought the monumental sum of $340,000, a truly astonishing price in a time of economic depression. The catalogue was compiled by Dr. George C. Williamson, who catalogued the collection and advised Morgan on many of the purchased.
