This stunning French Industrial compendium clock was crafted by Francois-Arsene Margaine, one of France's most renowned clock makers. At the center of this striking timepiece is an 8-day repeater clock in the form of an anvil with various mechanical instuments, representing the touchstone of the great changes in industry during the 19th century. The clock is joined by other "instruments," including a thermometer, a compass, a barometer and wells for ink and powder. Hammers atop the anvil release a platform lever escapement button, striking the hour on a gong when pressed. All of these components, wrought in elegant brass, are arranged on a base of red marble with a dished pen tray. Francois-Arsene Margaine was one of the best and most famous of the carriage clock makers of the Belle Epoque. His company was awarded the Silver Medal at the Paris Exhibition Universelle of 1889 and a Gold Medal in 1900.

Marked Margaine/Paris.
