A captivating French Great Wheel Skeleton Clock in the Empire style. This clock features a large or "great" central wheel allowing for longer running duration as well as a rare combination of pendulum and pin-wheel escapement. The timepiece is accentuated by a marble, footed base with gilt bronze plaques. Skeleton clocks such as this played an important role in the homes of the French aristocracy. French skeleton clocks in particular were designed with elegance in mind, for these elaborate timepieces served as the focal point for the homes of the elite.
