This stately Gothic Revival upholstered armchair possesses an architectural grace. Crafted of oak, this imposing seat boasts clean, sturdy lines. Its only decoration, a set of three tracery panels, lends it a refined, vaulted beauty.

Inspired by the novels of Sir Walter Scott, the Gothic prose of the Brontë sisters and the ambitious rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament, the early Victorians embraced the re-emergence of the Gothic style with great enthusiasm. Furniture such as this reflected both those romantic notions that this style conjured and the hand-made aesthetic of the Arts and Crafts movement, itself a romantic return to the emphasis on human, rather than machine, craftsmanship.
