This exceptional antique terracotta bust was crafted at Vienna's renowned Goldscheider porcelain manufactory. Designed by French sculptor Leveque, this enchanting sculpture exhibits exotic feminine beauty as envisioned by the late 19th-century European imagination. Originally part of a sculptural pair representing a North African man and woman, L'esclave is a quintessential Goldscheider piece, representing both the aesthetic appeal of the African physiognomy and the deep color, and edgy design of the Art Nouveau period.

In 1885, Friedrich Goldscheider founded the Goldscheider Manufactory and Majolica Factory in Vienna and it became the most influential ceramic firm in Austria. Goldscheider achieved worldwide renown as one of the most remarkable and prolific pottery firms of the 19th and 20th centuries and succeeded in setting the standards and style for Art Deco ceramics by employing both well-established sculptors and innovative up-and-comers. The firm was renowned for their starkly realistic and fluid designs that received numerous prestigious awards throughout Goldscheider's lifetime, including the bronze medal at the 1889 Paris International Exhibition.
