An intriguing specimen of artistic style and symbolism, this handsome Regency period giltwood convex, or bull's-eye, mirror depicts the military dominance of the English navy during the 18th and 19th centuries. The stately eagle, a timeless image of power, independence and victory, sits atop pedestal with a gilt ball and chain suspended from its beak. The imagery of the ball and chain are believed to represent the practice of firing chained cannon balls from battle ships in order to demast the enemy. Serpents with acanthus leaf tails flank the eagle, symbolizing healing. The sublime spherule surround and acanthus and acorn drop complete this powerful piece.

English naval ships of the period were constructed of sturdy English oak and believed to be the finest sailing vessels on the open sea, an idea symbolized by the oak leaf motif around the parameter of the mirror. Oak is also symbolic of faith, strength, knowledge and endurance - ideals that reflected not only English military might but national honor as well. This rare and amazing mirror still possesses its original gilding and mirror plate, making it an exceptional example of English furniture at its finest.
