This elegant gold snuff box bears the coat of arms and crest of George IV and the date November 28, 1820. It bears the mark AJS and is of 18 karat gold. This rare and enchanting English box has an elaborate engraving of three Roman goddesses bearing the implements of their reign. Minerva holds a spear encircled with a snake and a shield. Themis, the goddess of justice holds a sword and the scales of balance. To the far right Diana, the goddess of the hunt and the moon brandishes a graceful bow.
Royalty and nobility collected snuff boxes and often exchanged them as personal and diplomatic gifts. One bearing the crest of the king would have been an exceptional and highly desired acquisition. In recent years antique snuff boxes have become exceedingly desirable with the ability to top seven-figures at auction.
