This magnificent silver gilt covered monteith is the only example with its cover we have ever owned. Crafted during the Regency period, the elaborate repoussé design is a tour-de-force of Rococo-inspired imagery, from the pastoral hunting scene with a huntsman, stag and hounds, to the symphony of satyr masks, scrolls, fruit and flowers entwined throughout the entire piece. Chinoiserie castes and hinged wreath handles complete the stunning look. A similar, yet uncovered monteith by Edward Farrell is housed at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
The monteith features the maker's marks "TG," for Thomas Gairdner, and "WB." Monteiths are among the most charming and desirable of all silver service pieces. So named for its inventor, the monteith is a bowl used for the cooling of wine glasses. The rim has depressions in it that allow the stem of the wine glass to be caught by its base so that the bowl can be submerged into ice-water, with the base staying dry. The rarity of these unique serving pieces has afforded many of them great value among silver collectors.
