This extraordinary period George III five-pedestal dining table is crafted of rare and exotic padouk (or padauk) wood, a timber native to Asia and Africa. Crafted in China for the European market, the construction of this monumental dining table suggests Canton workmanship. The leaves and pedestals can be adjusted, giving the user a variety of sizes to choose from to suit their needs. Over time, the leaves and pedestals of these exquisite tables were often replaced, broken into smaller arrangements of reassembles with different veneers. This table, however, remains in pristine, original condition. Also, the logistics of shipping a table of this grand size from China to Britain were enormous during this period, so very few large furnishings were ever created. This also suggests that this exceptional table was created by special commission. All of these elements combine to rank this table among the finest examples of 18th-century Anglo-Chinese furniture available on the market.

Padouk, or padauk, wood is prized for its durability, stability and overall beauty. This table illustrates that, when properly stained and cared for, this timber displays a luxuriously deep reddish hue, often highlighted by purplish tones that will last for years. Padouk is also known to be very resistant to decay, warping and insects, including termites. When grown in its burled form, the timber is known as amboyna.
