This phenomenal Georgian concertina card table is a masterpiece of English woodworking. Constructed for multi-functional use, this mahogany table displays beautifully integrated design elements in every position. Gothic architectural elements are incorporated into the design motif as a blind-fretwork frieze matches a rosette-carved edge with perfect symmetry. As a side table, the mottled mahogany surface changes as light dances on its hand-applied wax finish. An ingenious opening mechanism gives the table its unique name. As the top swivels like a turret, the back legs pull out of an accordion-like fold to lengthen and support the extended top. A green baize lines the playing-surface of the serpentine top, while square tapering legs and guttae feet provide stable support. Such a complex construction is the result of thoughtful design and skillful craftsmanship. Its match is rarely found in such exquisite condition. 35" wide x 17" deep (closed), 34" deep (open) x 29" high PROVENANCE: Bought from Dunphey 19 July 1965. £315 as 'Irish Chippendale' and by descent.
