This marvelous pearlware bowl commemorates King George III with the inscription "Long live the King" in blue underglaze within an unpretentious crown and shell decoration. Developed by the English potteries about 1775 as a result of efforts to produce a white pottery that looked like porcelain, pearlware is extremely rare today, and this piece is of particular importance. In October 1788, King George contracted a porphyria, a serious illness which that caused severe mental disturbances. His deterioration sparked a major political crisis. In an effort to prevent the opposition, supported by the Prince of Wales, from gaining strength, the Tories issued a number of pearlware pieces advocating health to the King.
