This exquisite French tri-color gold snuff box is embossed with a central medallion depicting a botanical scene with an urn and birds in flight. The enchanting oval design is etched and engraved with rose, yellow, and green gold embellishments and is dated to 1773. It bears the Parisian makers mark for Louis de Roussy and the charge and discharge marks of Julien Alaterre. Also known as tabatiéres, antique snuff boxes have become some of the most wanted collectibles in recent years. In fact, in a December 2003 auction at Christie's, a gold snuff box sold for £789,250, or $1.3 million.
