This rare and enchanting French box has a painting of a Classical scene. The painting is framed in diamonds and the box has elaborate gold scrollwork along the border and an etching of a garland with flowers and ribbons along the sides. Works of skillful and attentive artistry, snuff containers like this were among the most fashionable luxury items from the 16th to the 18th centuries, and were often exchanged as gifts.
