This splendid bronze ormolu chandelier is crafted in a design attributed to prominent French sculptor Frédéric-Eugène Piat. A luxurious example of Art Nouveau artistry, this light's striking design incorporates four sea creatures in a highly stylized motif. Shades of molded glass complete this elegant look. One of the most prominent sculptors and ornemanistes, or prolific designers of ornament, of his time, Piat created exceptional designs and models, particularly for clocks, wall appliqués, ceiling and table lamps, candelabras, and torchères, all of which were executed by the leading firms of Parisian high quality bronziers, such as Christofle, Colin, Lemerle-Charpentier, Motteau and Maison Millet. As an artistic collaborator with these firms, many of Piat's creations were shown on their respective stands at the major international exhibitions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1894, Piat was also a benefactor of the arts as well as an artist. In 1894, he gave considerable funds towards the inauguration of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in his native Troyes, included in his gift at least twenty of his creations.
