A gorgeous and rare 19th-century Meerschaum pipe expertly carved in the form of a stylish lady.
Circa 1880
9" long
Meerschaum is a rare mineral particularly suited to these elaborately carved Austrian pipes. As the pipe is smoked, the light and porous mineral changes color to give the pipe its characteristic golden and amber hues. In fact, the artists who created such masterpieces as this would often hire someone to smoke the pipe until the optimum patina was achieved. This particular example, with its exquisite detailing, is much more ornate than the average Meerschaum pipe and is quite a rarity. Complete with its original fitted leather case. Excellent condition.
