This wonderful French desk is decorated in the exquisite tortoiseshell-and-bronze inlay style perfected by celebrated ébéniste André-Charles Boulle. Displaying some of the finest craftsmanship of the 19th century, this desk is a testament to Boulle's genius and influence, as his trademark ornate designs cover the desk on all sides, including the bottom interior and on the beautifully carved legs. As practical as it is beautiful, the desk also features a red, leather-lined writing surface and a hidden compartment, located in the bottom interior, for concealing those confidential documents. The marquetry technique perfected by master craftsman Boulle in the 17th century inspired the most gifted cabinetmakers of his time to embrace this remarkable craft, so much so that the process now bears his name. Introduced by Boulle during the reign of Louis XIV, Boulle marquetry was favored for adorning furnishings and decorative objects because of its extravagance, beauty and uniqueness. To find a piece in such excellent condition is truly exceptional.
