A magnificent William and Mary period chest, clearly distinguished by an expertly applied oysterwood veneer of fine English walnut. From its inlaid top of semi-circular patterns, to its intricate brass pulls and wonderfully curved bun feet, this antique chest is a remarkable example of English craftsmanship in the late 17th century. With their ascent to the English and Scottish thrones, the Dutch King William III and his English bride Queen Mary, daughter of the deposed James II, heralded a new era of cabinetry in the British Isles, bringing with them many of the Netherlands' best craftsmen. Under their influence, furniture became graceful and decorative, leaving behind the heavier attributes of the earlier Gothic manner. This incredible chest beautifully exemplifies this transitional and revolutionary style. To find such an example in such excellent condition is truly rare.
