This fascinating yet macabre medical kit was used by a field surgeon during the American Civil War. Nestled in its original Mahogany case, this assemblage of instruments includes an amputation saw, tourniquet, scalpel, hooks and other tools used to quickly, and as mercifully as possible, administer medical treatment to their patients. Before the advent of modern medical advances in pain management and hygiene, surgeries were limited to the setting or amputation of a limb, with such procedures occurring only under dire circumstances. On the battlefield, these operations were undertaken in the most haphazard way, and without anesthesia. Heavy, soft lead bullets would literally shattered bone and cause a grisly wound almost guaranteed to become infected, making these procedures a necessary evil in order to give the wounded even the slightest chance of survival. Complete surgeon's kits are among the most sought-after medical antiques, particularly those used in the Civil War.
