A richly carved and inlaid Chippendale-style case surrounds this remarkable timepiece. This tall case clock stands just over 9 feet high and represents the final glory days of British horology when makers were striving to produce the ulitmate clock before retiring to the pressures of mass production. No expense was spared when designing this elaborately carved case with panels of inlaid decoration on the hood and the base. The clock mechanism boasts a mercurial pendulum, known for its accuracy in timekeeping since mercury provided a more precise means of temperature compensation than iron, brass or even wooden pendulums. Mercurial pendulums were generally used in England, where precision timekeeping was of the utmost importance. When the strike/silent feature is not silenced, the clock chimes on eight tubular bells, with the choice of Westminster or Whittington chimes, with a crisp, beautiful ring. Glazed glass panels surround the sides and door of the clock so you can easily view the tubes, weights and pendulum. Signed Maple & Co., Ltd. Circa 1890.
