Thirty-six magnificently carved specimens of Chinese spinach jade are showcased in this exceptional floor screen. A work of monumental artistry and craftsmanship, this extraordinary work of art memorializes the life and accomplishments of the 7th-century Emperor Taizong, the second emperor of the Tang Dynasty.
Measuring over 11 feet in length, this astonishing work tells the story of the emperor's life and accomplishments, from his youth as a gifted child on to his prime as a powerful warrior, to the end of his life. Events from the emperor's history are rendered in incredible relief carving on the front of the center line of jade plaques, with the exact scenes incised and gilded on the reverse. Imagery of various native fowl rests just below each scene which parallels important aspects of the Emperor's life. Each screen panel is surmounted by reticulated dragon motifs, while equally intricate medallions comprise the bottom row. These stunning plaques are framed within beautifully lacquered wood boasting delicate brass inlay. Additional, exquisitely reticulated jade plaques frame the entire screen with a luxuriously lacquered and reticulated wood base giving support.
Such phenomenal works of jade are typically seen as small table-top screens featuring a single panel. To find an entire floor screen of this magnitude, boasting 36 thick and brilliant crafted jade panels, with additional jade framing the entire piece, is truly extraordinary.
