This exquisite Charles X billiard table is an early example of the fine billiard tables produced by the Chevillotte firm of Orleans, France. The table is crafted of rosewood and bird's eye maple with exotic, intricate wood inlay and adorned with fabulous bronze ball returns in the form of lion heads. Once pocketed, the ball drops into the lion's mouth, opening the jaw and exposing the ball for retrieval. In terms of quality, rarity and beauty, it is one of the finest tables on the market. Marked 'Chevillotte Billiards' Circa 1870 56 1/2" wide x 101 1/2" length x 32 3/4" high In 1860, Eugéne Chevillotte began selling his furnishings from a covered wagon to local residences and cafés in Orleans, France. From this humble beginning, Chevillotte quickly became renowned for his brilliant custom pieces, above all else his billiard tables. Chevillotte's success allowed him to establish a showroom and workshop in Orleans where he concentrated solely on the creation of his billiard tables and enjoyed the patronage of the French elite. Exquisite marquetry, exotic timbers and delightful design are benchmarks of Chevillotte's creations.
