This extraordinary and highly important brooch was crafted by Cartier to commemorate the liberation of Paris in 1944, capturing the essence of this historic event. Carved of a magnificent 4.50-carat Burma ruby, the symbolic bird is ready to fly from its cage, which is comprised of about 4.50 carats of diamonds and three sapphire cabochons weighing approximately .12 carats. Set in platinum. Complete with original case.
The imagery of the caged bird is one with particular resonance for the people of Paris. During the German occupation of the city during World War II, many Parisians referred to themselves as birds in a cage, and after the war, several luxury goods houses celebrated the city's new freedom by creating items adorned with motif of the open cage. These items are now exceptionally rare.
