Item Details

  • Stone:
    Sapphire
The breathtaking color and rarity of this natural, "no-heat" Burma sapphire is perfectly presented in this fabulous platinum ring. This 8.19-carat sapphire exhibits the perfect velvety blue, the color most prized in Burma sapphires. The stone is shaped in a beautiful cushion form with a modified brilliant/step cut, and flanked by two half moon-shaped diamonds weighing 1.10 total carats. This sapphire is certified by the Gubelin GemLab to be natural with no heat treatment and Burmese in origin.

For centuries, Burma has been associated with the world's finest sapphires and its history is rich with intrigue. Burma was a bountiful source of both sapphires and rubies for more than 1,000 years, though the best stones were never allowed to leave the kingdom. Until the middle of the 19th century, the Burmese king commanded that any and all gemstones weighing more than 5.00 carats would become the possession of the kingdom of Burma. Miners, anxious to sell their gems, broke many magnificent sapphires into pieces smaller than 5.00 carats so as to bypass the king's law. Sapphires such as this, weighing over 5.00 carats, are exceptionally rare and precious. Furthermore, in 1962, the borders of Burma were closed due to political unrest, all but shutting down the mining of glorious sapphires. The opportunity to acquire a Burma stone of such substantial size and perfect color, is indeed, a rarity.

Ruby Ring

Legendary Gemstones...Rubies and Sapphires

For thousands of years, rubies and sapphires have been revered for their beauty and perceived mystical powers. It was thought that rubies held the key to serenity and peace and could secure eternal love and happiness. The ancient Persians believed that the earth itself rested upon a great sapphire whose reflection caused the sky to be blue. Rubies and sapphires continue to captivate with their unparalleled beauty, and quality stones have become excellent investments.

Judging by their distinct color, it may be hard to believe that rubies and sapphires are actually the same stone, identical in all characteristics except color. Both are corundum and each derives their rich color from tiny amounts of different chemical impurities. These amazing corundum minerals are second only to diamonds in hardness, and in many cases, are a much better value.
