Not only does this outstanding doré bronze jewelry box feature an exquisite hand-painted portrait, painted on ivory, placed in the center of its lid, but also rests on magnificent cabriolet legs, accented by highly detailed ram's heads. These beautifully formed legs are combined with a striking shape, extravagant classically-inspired decoration and a velvet-lined interior for a truly intriguing design. Ivory painting was practiced in the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe and America for keepsake portraits. Painted on thin, semi-translucent pieces with watercolor or tempera paints using sable- or marten-hair brushes, usually under a magnifying glass, these paintings displayed colors that had a velvet quality, which was often enhanced, on the thinner ivories, by the glow produced by a gold leaf or tinted backing.
