A tour-de-force of Black Forest artistry, this massive entry hallstand boasts magnificent carving and a rare design. This monumental oak structure is dominated by an intrepid ibex, which takes a sure-footed stance atop a rocky mountain outcropping. The beveled mirror, set into a tree of carved antlers, and space for umbrellas and canes make this stand the perfect stop upon entering and exiting your home. Black Forest furniture typically featured playful figures of bears in a wide variety of poses and humorous situations, while those pieces featuring the ibex were much less common. To find one of these distinguished items, especially of such grand size and detailed artistry, is quite extraordinary.
Originating in Switzerland in the mid-1800s, Black Forest is a distinctive European style that exemplifies traditional Swiss folk traditions. Pieces are executed in hard woods with rich, dark finishes and realistic carving. Motifs ranging from organic foliage to the various animals found in the forest, such as ivy, deer, rabbits, edelweiss flowers and especially bears, were featured on large furniture items such as benches, hall trees and chairs as well as smaller items like clocks, wall hangings and other objets d'art. To find a large example in such excellent condition is truly exceptional.
