Originating in Switzerland in the mid-1800s, Black Forest is a distinctive European style that exemplifies traditional Swiss folk traditions. Pieces are executed in hard woods with rich, dark finishes and realistic carving. Motifs ranging from organic foliage to the various animals found in the forest, such as ivy, edelweiss flowers, deer, rabbits, and especially bears, were featured on large furniture items such as benches, hall trees and chairs as well as smaller items like clocks, wall hangings and other objets d'art. To find a large example in such excellent condition is truly exceptional. Circa 1880 55 1/4" wide x 10 3/4" deep x 95 3/8" high
