This exceptional carved bench is a superb example of the intricate and highly desirable Black Forest style. Beautifully crafted in an expressive and playful theme, this bench is supported by two wonderfully carved bear cubs while a third adorable cub breeches a fence on the back rest. Originating in Switzerland, the Black Forest style exemplifies traditional Swiss folk traditions, executed in hard woods with rich, dark finishes and realistic carving. Subjects typically include organic foliage and various animals found in the forest, such as ivy, deer, rabbits, edelweiss flowers and especially bears. These images seen in carved clock cases, hall trees, desks, picture frames, chairs and all variety of decorative objects and furnishings, even nut crackers. Expertly detailed and exhibiting a rare blond finish, this bench is a superior illustration of this fine art. A similar, though less ornate, bench is pictured in Fantasy Furniture by Bruce M. Newman, page 116. Circa 1870 59" wide x 18" deep x 38 ½" high
