  • Origin:
A beautiful, scantily draped woman is rendered in remarkable detail upon this large Vienna-style porcelain vase. The image of the maiden, signed Geyer, is executed by hand with tremendous skill and is after a work by German artist Max Nonnenbruch (1857-1922) entitled Bien Être. An iridescent-green ground adorned with magnificent gilt foliate enameling in the Art Nouveau taste adds richness to this porcelain work of art. The entire piece resides in its original gilt bronze plinth.

There were two porcelain portrait painters with the last name "Geyer" working in Vienna during the 19th century, Josef and Bruno. Josef was active at the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in the early 1800s, and Bruno, who may be related to Josef, was active in the mid-19th century.

Max Nonnenbruch was a genre and historical painter of the German school. He began his formal art training at the Düsseldorf and Munich Academies, later studying at l'Ecole de Beaux-Arts in Paris and completing his training at the Academy Julian in Italy. Nonnenbruch's works are known for their exoticism and focus upon the female form. His works were highly regarded and influenced some of the greatest porcelain artists of the era to recreate them on exceptional objects such as this remarkable vase.
