Large and meticulously-preserved suites of Biedermeier dining chairs are incredibly scarce, and are some of the most sought-after furnishings. This particular suite comprises six side chairs and two arm chairs crafted of luxurious mahogany. Their open-back design in the form of gilded and polychromed swans is vastly more detailed that what is typical for the period, making these chairs even more desirable with collectors. Sweeping sabre legs and lion monopodia, or paw feet, create a lightness and refinement for which Biedermeier furnishings are famed.
The Biedermeier period lasted from the fall of Napoleon in 1815 until the Revolution of 1848. Developed mainly in Germany, Austria and Scandinavia, the Biedermeier taste was greatly influenced by the Empire style, and perfected the notion of elegant simplicity with clean lines and proportions. Most items were made from local woods such as cherry and ash, but a few rarities were crafted of mahogany. To find an entire suite crafted of this desirable timber is quite exceptional.
