Item Details

  • Period:
    20th Century
  • Origin:
    England/Ireland
This delicate Belleek pierced spill vase takes the form of a woven basket. Crafted of Irish clay and fired using traditional methods, this charming vase displays a pieced, loop rim and features the carefully applied floral decoration for which Belleek is famous. Belleek baskets were first created from designs by renowned basket weaver Michael Maguire, who first brought his skill and ingenuity as a figure maker to the Belleek firm in the 1880s. Uniting the intricate arts of basketry and pottery, this spill vase is from a pattern that dates to over 100 years old. Two almost identical vases are featured on page 34 of Belleek Irish Porcelain by Marion Langham.

Second green, or fifth, mark

Circa 1955-1965

In the days before matches were widely available, spill vases were kept on fireplace mantels to hold rolled paper tapers or thin wood sticks (spill), which where used to light candles, lamps or a gentleman's cigar with fire from the fireplace.

Belleek pottery has been held in high esteem since its founding in 1857. Extraordinary attention is given to every detail, and each piece is held to the highest standard. In fact, in 1857, the pottery's founder, John Caldwell Bloomfield, declared that any piece with even the slightest flaw should be destroyed. Though no two pieces of Belleek craftwork are ever exactly identical, each is an amazing work of art.
