This monumental Belleek porcelain ice pail and cover, known as the Prince of Wales Ice Pail, is a testament to the excellence of Belleek artistry. Exhibiting incredible, hand-made detailing, the ice pail is crafted in an exuberant nautical motif in both a biscuit and mother-of-pearl enamel finish. On the lid, a putto rides the waves astride a dolphin, blowing a trumpet and accompanied by a trio of hippocampi. The high- and bas-relief frieze on the trophy-form pail's body depicts an army of putti harvesting rushes at the water's edge. Finally, three sirens bear the weight of this impeccable piece. A truly exceptional design, it is featured in Belleek: the Complete Collector's Guide and Illustrated Reference by Richard K. Degenhardt.
Because if its complex design and difficult manufacture, the Prince of Wales Ice Pail was one of the most expensive items ever produced by Belleek. Originally designed in 1880 for presentation to the Prince of Wales, who became Edward VII, one of these urns was crafted with the intention of being presented at the coronation of Edward VIII in 1937. However, this reluctant monarch abdicated in December of 1936. Hence, the coronation never took place, and the pail remained at the factory.
Features the Sixth Belleek, and third green mark on the base, for dates 1965-1980
8" diameter x 18 ½" high
Known for being extremely dainty and lightweight, Belleek porcelain is among the finest in the world. Distinguished by designs taken directly from nature, Belleek pottery stands out in any collection.
