This majestic pair of marble pedestals was crafted by famed French bronze founder Ferdinand Barbedienne. Crafted in a classical column form, the pedestals are comprised of rare Rouge Griotte marble with Rosso Antico D'italia forming the top surfaces, bases and plinths. The magnificent bronze ormolu Corinthian capitals, laurel wreath feet and anthemion border mark these columns flawlessly exhibit the Barbedienne skill and aesthetic.

Barbedienne was one of the most sought-after founders of late 19th-century France, and carried contracts with some of Paris' greatest sculptors. In partnership with Achille Collas, who invented a method for making reductions of sculptures, Barbedienne produced works by both his contemporaries such as Antoine-Louis Barye and masters like Michaelangelo and Luca della Robbia. He was known for his bronze sculpture, particularly figures and animals, and for pioneering the use of ormolu mounts. He was also known for his Renaissance Revival furniture. At the 1855 Paris Exhibition, he exhibited several pieces, including a gilt-bronze mounted oak dressing table and a gilt-bronze mounted ebony veneered bookcase. Today, pieces hailing from this foundry are extremely sought after by collectors.
