Reflecting the elaborate Louis XV-inspired style so adored by Napoléon III and his wife, the stylish Empress Eugénie, the centerpiece features a large bowl of red cut-to-clear crystal, boasting a striking crosshatched and fluted motif, resting on a base between dramatically styled acanthus leaf handles. Elevated upon a column pedestal on a splayed footed base, this centerpiece combines outstanding craftsmanship with inspired artistry. Circa 1860 28" wide x 10 1/8" deep x 14 1/2" high Baccarat has long been internationally recognized for its magnificent creations. During the mid-19th century, their tableware was favored by European royalty, with the Russian aristocracy proving to be some of their most loyal clientele. At one point, one-third of Baccarat's workforce (over 2,000 employees) was assigned solely to fulfill orders for the Russian court. In addition to spectacular pieces like these candelabra, Baccarat created scores of stemware for the Russian market. A custom initiated by the first tsars mandated that no one should drink from a glass touched by their own lips, and many grand dukes and noblemen followed suit. Consequently, many Baccarat crystal goblets were immediately smashed after only a single use!
