This enchanting Austrian pottery vide poche, or valet tray, is a fine example of the Art Nouveau style. The gently gilded and hand-painted dish is intricately modeled as a nymph lying beside a lily pad watching a crab, with spot-glazed "droplets" of water added for greater detail. The term "vide poche" means oddments or, literally, empty pockets, and these dishes were originally designed to be a catch-all for one's coins, keys, and other odds and ends that were collected during the day. A fine piece of Austrian pottery signed by Hoebrich is a great collector's piece.

Signed "Hoebrich," marked with "Made in Austria" stamp and impressed number "4750/A" on the underside.

Circa 1890

 9 1/8" wide x 11 3/4" length x 3 5/8" high
