This rare forged iron chest evokes the danger and excitement of traveling the high seas during the 18th century. Also known as an armada chest, a sturdy lockbox such as this would have protected the valuables on a ship in pirate-infested waters. Comprised of wooden panels intersected with iron straps, this chest features an impressive double-key lock, as well as a heavily lined interior, both of which would have made breaking in a near-impossibility. Almost certainly crafted in Augsburg or Nuremburg, this chest is very similar to those taken to sea by naval officers, who would have bolted them to the deck to prevent movement by man or sea. To find such a wonderful, well-preserved example is quite rare.
