Item Details

  • Period:
    18th Century
  • Origin:
    America
This important silver spoon was crafted by famed silversmith and American patriot Paul Revere. Renowned for his work in the Georgian and English Neoclassical styles, this spoon is exemplary of Revere's talents as a silversmith. While his midnight ride made him a legend, it was Paul Revere's extraordinary work as a silversmith that has left such a valuable legacy on the American decorative arts. In fact, Revere was among the very few American silversmiths who had the talent to actually complete a piece of silver from start to finish, including the engraving.

This spoon bears the initials "OEG" for Ozias Goodwin IV (1755-1819), was a ship captain in the East Indies trade. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Goodwin and his wife Elizabeth relocated to Boston, where they often commissioned works from Revere. Today, items the silversmith crafted for the Goodwin's can be found in the collections of the Rhode Island School of Design, the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, many of which bear the very same OEG monogram featured on this spoon.
