Superior carving and design distinguish this splendid American Rococo Revival mahogany sideboard. Crafted in the classic double pedestal style of the highest quality mottled mahogany, this sideboard is as functional as it is strikingly beautiful. High-relief, almost three-dimensional carvings of satyr masks, cartouches and heavy grapevines adorn the entire piece, from the crest of the large center mirror to the prominent frieze and paneling on the cabinet doors. Not only does this magnificent sideboard offer substantial space on which to place serving dishes, but also provides ample storage for wine bottles, dishes and flatware in its felt-lined drawers. Three original mirrors complete the elegance and luxury of this grand design. A piece like this would have been an important fixture in the dining room of a stately home.

The American Rococo Revival style has become synonymous with period Southern décor. Furnishings, such as this grand sideboard, graced the plantation homes of prominent families of the Antebellum era and were considered prized possessions. Serving as the ultimate status symbol, each piece was created with absolute attention to luxury and stature in mind to match these breathtaking estates. Fine American furnishings displaying the remarkable qualities seen in this sideboard are displayed in museums or held by a few families of long Southern lineage.
