An important example of Colonial American furniture crafted in Rhode Island, this Queen Anne-style dressing table was once part of the famed Chipstone Foundation's collection of decorative art. Considered to be one of the finest examples of early American furniture, is beautifully crafted of maple, chestnut and pine with walnut veneer displaying a rich patina. American cabinetmakers often used the native woods found in the New World, preferring graceful designs such as the Queen Anne that appealed to settlers who were more concerned with function rather than form. This table, however, features the best of both. A handsome surface leads down to the facade, which features three drawers outlined in delicate inlay work with wonderful skirting below. The table rests upon elegantly curving cabriole legs terminating in pad feet and retains its original brass hardware. Marked by its masterful design and craftsmanship, as well as a complete provenance, this dressing table is arguably the grandest piece of American furniture available on the market.

This dressing table is featured in Oswaldo Rodriguez Roque's American Furniture at Chipstone, pages 32-33, item 14.

The letters "JDR" (or "IDR") are written in chalk on one of the drawers, and a label is afixed to the table interior from the John Walton, Inc. of Connecticut.
